Another Question from Harlie

Hi Everykitty. It's Harlie here with another small problem. Again, it's a problem Mom and Dad haven't really experienced much with Mattingly. My problem is, I'm shedding LIKE CRAZY!!! Mom says I remind her of Pigpen (pictured above). Not because I'm dirty, but because there is a cloud of fur surrounding me at all times. I've got black furs mixed in with my white and vice versa... even the ones that have fallen out stick to me. And of course to everything else. Mom and Dad know it's natural to shed, and aren't surprised that I'm shedding since it got up to 70F here over the weekend. We do have one question though. Will brushing help this problem? Does it help remove the fur during brushing so less ends up on the couches and clothes and in Mom and Dad's noses? Everyone keeps sneezing because of my furs... even Mattingly!!!

Not to worry. I am still getting just as much love and attention, it just gets interrupted sometimes with bouts of sneezing. I am healthy and well-groomed. We are just wondering if regular brushing sessions might help. I've never been brushed, but I think I would like it alot. Thanks for any advice or hints you can offer!

~~Purrs from Harlie!

Brushing should help. After all, every hair you catch in a brush is one hair that isn't floating around.

The problem might be whether Harlie will tolerate it. Some kitties like getting brushed, some treat it as some sort of personal assault.

Regular brushing is good. Just like beans brushing their toothies. But some kitties like it more that others. I tolerate it for a little bit on my top and sides. Then play bitey with ZoomGroom.

Of course brushing will help you. Either with a kitty brush, a massage grooming glove or a Zoom Groom. Ask your Mom to try it for a minute at first to see if you like it. Some of us don't. Then the glob of fur that's in the brush can be thrown away instead of flying around!

Love,
Tipper

Mittens used to shed terribly. After she had her problem stomach and was put on special food, the shedding has been cut by 3/4 and her fur is much softer and very shiny. The vet put her on Eukanuba. I think some cats shed more than others.

This is a grave problem for all kitty lovers. My kitties often start sharing soo much hair that we feel really worried. Combing or brushing is very helpful during this time.

I have a very long, double-thickness coat of fur so I shed lots. My mum combs me most days, I really like being combed and lie there and purr and lick the comb, I even purr when she is tugging out tangles with the comb, which she thinks is weird. We also have a soft brush but don't use it much as it doesn't get nearly as much loose hair out as the comb does. I also have a Zoom Groom and I do like it but again do not use it as much as the comb. If Harlie doesn't like being combed, try a brush or a Zoom Groom, it's better than nothing. My mum says she has combed out so much hair from me by now that she could have stuffed a lot of cushions with it. However, although I like being groomed, I do not like having my claws clipped AT ALL!!!

I with I could help you, but I don't really shed. When my Mommie tries to brush me, I just try to bite and play with the brush.

Harlie, I used to shed too much, too. Then our human started putting fish oil and flax oil in our food, and she started making our own food, and our shedding got much better! We feel better now, too. I'll have her put the recipe up on ArtsyCatsy real soon!

By the way, I'm Rocky, CEO (Cat Executive Officer) at the new ArtsyCatsy. Come sniff us out & if we make you purr, want to link to each other?

We're big fans of the Zoom Groom. That gets the hairs real good. (Ours has been missing since our move to the house in August...) Shedded hair can be fun ... Maggie was catching Josie's loose hairs as they floated through the sunlight yesterday.

I save my shedding for when the Woman has on clean clothes. I jump on her lap and shed away...

Shedding too much can be a food thing or a stress thing or a breed thing...if it's really bad, you might wanna go see the stabby people...
